Be Ready For WESTEST

Students brainstormed ideas on how to motivate others to do their best on the WESTEST that is coming up soon. We also included some test strategies we have been working with. The students completed their own posters. Way to go Trap Hill Middle School 6th Grade Students. You are going to do great!

During the Assessment FOR Learning Team meeting, our teachers completed an inservice on how to use the Nintendo DS Game systems as formative assessment in the classroom. They REALLY enjoyed this technology and there was a lot of interest of using these in more classrooms.

We can use the Nintendo DS systems on an individual basis or in groups. Students can compete against each other using wireless connections. It is a great way to use differentiation of instruction in any classroom.

Recently, our school was awarded $3,400 from the BECKLEY AREA FOUNDATION to purchase a classroom set of Nintendo DS Game Systems and 19 educational games. Two co-workers from the Game Stop store in our community, came to give our students and inservice on how to use and take care of the game systems. Thanks Amber and Jenna for doing a great job! They also reviewed rules on when and how to use these correctly in the classroom. The games involved math skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary skills, along with critical thinking and problem solving skills. This is just another way to use 21st century technology in the classroom.

Stations in Math

We use stations in Mrs. Dye's Math class. We have 4 different activities that the students are to participate in with teamwork. They have technology tools and other resources they use to complete assignments in each station. They will complete activities such as tests and video instruction on the iPods, email fraction assignment to teacher, use the school pads on Prime factorization, use Brainchild hand-held games, activities on problem solving, and many other such activities. This is great for differentiated learning, enrichment activities, and reteach.

iPod Math

Students like using the iPods in Math. They can take a math test on iQuiz and learn new math concepts using video instruction. Students can also make their own videos to put on the iPod.

Laptops in Math

Here are students in Mrs. Dye's Math class using the laptop computers. They complete math assignments, use email with attachments, take tests on Acuity, keep track of their grades on Edline, have access to a 6th grade message board and class blog, and many other activities.
